Founded in 1914 in Hibbing, Minnesota, Carl Eric Wickman decided to use a 7 passenger mobile that he was unable to sell to drive passengers from Hibbing to Alice, beginning a bus service with Andy Anderson and C.A.A. Heed. The next year, he joined up with Ralph Bogan, who had a similar operation running passengers from Hibbing to Duluth, Minnesota.
After the First World War, they had 18 buses in operation and made $40,000 yearly. In 1926, Wickman purchased operations on the West Coast to expand his line. By 1928, the bus line was opened for transcontinental trips from New York to California and earning $6 million dollars annually. Unfortunately, Wickman suffered greatly during the Great Depression.
Today, a company named “First Group” from the UK has purchased Greyhound. They now have around 1,229 buses that operate in over 3,800 locations across North America. They created a low-cost program called “Greyhound Express”, which are routes that have fewer stops and their buses are usually newer models and have guaranteed seating.
There are positions with this company that can be found at the corporate and the station level. These positions all have a chance to grow your job into a Greyhound career. There are positions at the entry-level at the station. Some positions include a bus driver, ticket agent, platform service agent, and operations manager.
The corporate level positions are often higher level positions, though there may be positions at the entry-level. Bus Driver- A bus driver is responsible for ensuring the bus makes it to the designated stops on time. The bus driver must have the proper licensing (CDL) to become a full bus driver. An operations manager may earn around $83,000 a year.
IT Technical Services- The IT technician is primarily responsible for making sure that all computers and servers are working properly. They will perform maintenance to ensure they stay in working order to last longer. They will fix any computer issues that may arise. They will make decisions on implementing new software or machines. An IT technician could earn around $70,000 a year.
