According to the Statewide Health Occupations Directory, the School Health Clerk is a member of the multidisciplinary school team that works under the guidance of the school nurse and under the direct supervision of the school principle or administrator. The School Health Clerk manages and performs various health services and clerical duties including the administration of medications; assisting and monitoring health care treatments; monitoring acute and chronic disease conditions; assisting the nurse with state mandated screenings; and maintaining appropriate studetn documentation. The School Health Clerk may also be responsible for data collection and developing state reports.

Minimal educational training requirements include certification in First Aid and CPR; clerical functions such as record keeping, computer use, and typing; as well as knowledge and experience working with a school age population.

El Camino college was the first community college in California to offer an 18 unit specialized certificate as a School Health Clerk. The training and education offered by this certificate includes courses in Child Development, Child Health and Safety. Pediatric First Aid and CPR. One of the courses outlines the roles and responsibilities of the School Health Clerk. Another focuses on Acute, Chronic, and Emotional Disorders commonly found in childhood and their treatment. Students learn how to set up a school health office and manage health information in a school office. Students are allowed to choose one to two elective courses which focus on children with disabilities, sign language and nutrition.

Anyone who enjoys working with children age 3 to 18 years and caring for the health needs of this population should consider earning this certificate. Positions are available in both Public and Private School systems. Depending on the School District they are either full or past time positions. Full time positions include benefits and salary ranges vary from district to district. After successful completion of the ECC SChool Health Clerk Program, the student may request certification from both El Camino College and the state of California.

School Health Clerk

  • The School Health Clerk Program is an 18 unit program.
  • Open to entry level students.
  • Prepares the student for work in schools with children assisting the school nurse in the Health Office.
  • Courses are included from the Early Childhood Education nursing.
  • Most of the courses are offered throughout the academic year and during the summer.

Required courses include:

  • CD 3 – Child Development
  • CD 10 – Child Health and Safety
  • CD 11 – Pediatric First Aid and CPR
  • Nursing 110 – Introduction to the School and Health Paraprofessional
  • Nursing 112 – Basic Health Care for Children
  • Nursing 114 – School Health Office and Information Management

Electives Include: (Choose one 3 unit course)

  • CD 4 – Children with Special Needs
  • CD 7 – Infant/Toddler Development
  • CD 8 – The Preschool Child
  • CD 15 – The School – Age Child
  • Nsg 95/96 – Cooperative Career Education
  • Sign Language 15 – Beginning Sign Language
  • Nut 15 – Nutrition for Infants and Young Children

Special Education Assistant and Respite Care Provider

Students participating in these programs will be learning to care for children with disabilities in the school classroom or in the home. Others areas of care include caring for the frail elderly population as well as people who need hospice. There are numerous opportunities in these fields!
