Overview

The Master of Social Work is designed to provide a higher degree coursework masters award following a Bachelors degree. The course aims to provide students with skills in areas of policy, research, clinical and community based practice.

Entry requirements

Qualified Social Work Entry – Applicants who have completed a Bachelor of Social Work degree recognized by the Australian Association of Social Work (AASW) or a qualification deemed by the Board to be equivalent, are eligible to apply for entry to this course. Applicants for the MSW (Qualified Social Work Entry) must have completed either (a) an AASW-accredited Bachelor of Social Work Honours or (b) an AASW-accredited Bachelor of Social Work plus at least 2 years professional work experience (paid or volunteer) or equivalent.

Graduate entry – Applicants who have completed a Bachelors degree other than in Social Work are eligible to apply for entry.

Applicants who have not completed at least one subject in the study of the individual and at least one subject in the study of society will be required to complete two intensive foundation subjects before the course commences.

If you believe you require these subjects for entry please ensure you submit your application as soon as possible prior to the advertised closing date. Foundation subjects include: “Introduction to the Social Sciences” and “Foundation Studies in Human Social Development”. These topics will be delivered online via the Flinders Learning Online system in the week before the beginning of Semester 1 and Semester 2. The study of these subjects will not incur a tuition fee. Applicants will be advised prior to the commencement of the course whether they are required to complete the intensive foundation subjects.

This course requires completion of two (2) field placements of 500 hours each. Students are required to receive DCSI (Department for Communities and Social Inclusion) Screening and Background checks, stating that they have successful clearances, in order to be eligible to undertake field placements. Students who do not receive DCSI clearances will not be able to complete their placement and therefore complete their degree. Applicants who have questions related to a criminal record are advised to contact the Head of Discipline (Social Work) to discuss suitability for the course.

Professional Association eligibility. To be eligible for membership to the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), students must have completed an accredited degree and also meet the AASW English language requirements.
